Braun, Wernher von

Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun (born March 23, 1912, died June 16, 1977) was a German rocket physicist and astronautics engineer, who became one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Germany and the United States. Having originally worked on the V-2 Rocket project, von Braun was recruited by Operation Paperclip and went on to become the first head of NASA.

von Braun provides the epigraph for Part I of Gravity's Rainbow: Beyond the Zero: Episode 11: "Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death."
